Costa Rica trip-planning checklist
1. Build the route first
- Choose two bases for a 7-day trip or about three for a 10-day trip.
- Match regions to your priority: wildlife, birding, beaches, volcano landscapes, or cloud forest.
- Protect the first and final days from long transfers.
2. Decide how you will move
- Compare rental car, private transfer, shared shuttle, and domestic flight by the exact route.
- Plan long drives in daylight and verify current road conditions.
- Confirm whether your lodging access—not just the town—requires higher clearance or 4WD.
3. Reserve the structural pieces
- Flights and the first and final nights.
- Limited-capacity park entries through the responsible authority.
- Critical transfers, high-demand lodging, and your highest-priority guided wildlife experience.
4. Pack for microclimates
- Light rain layer, quick-dry clothing, closed-toe trail shoes, sun protection, and insect repellent.
- A warm layer for cloud forest and higher elevations.
- Dry bag or waterproof pouch, refillable water bottle, binoculars, and any essential medication.
5. Keep ethical wildlife standards
- Choose habitat-based viewing with a qualified local guide.
- Keep distance; never feed, touch, bait, or handle wildlife for a photo.
- Follow park and reserve rules and confirm current operating details.
6. Final 72-hour check
- Reconfirm opening hours, reservations, pickup instructions, route conditions, and the weather outlook.
- Download offline maps and save emergency, lodging, and rental contacts.
- Leave unscheduled space: Costa Rica is better when every hour is not committed.

Check current information before travel: use Visit Costa Rica for official climate guidance and SINAC for participating national-park reservations. Operational details can change, so confirm requirements with the responsible authority or provider.
